Ultrasonic Ranging System
Ultrasonic ranging systems include industrial
and mobile robot guidance and solid or liquid level measurements
in silos, tanks or wood-chip bins.
An ultrasonic ranging
system mounted on top of a wood chip bin in Kelowna, B.C. Canada.
At each of the mills, there are bins that fill up with
wood chips and sawdust. Mounted on top of the bins is a radio
attached to a level sensor. Using DTMF tones, dispatch operators
can interrogate each individual bin and receive a five/six tone
reading (ie 6.8 which shows the contents are 6.8 meters from the
top of the bin). The accuracy of the level sensor is one tenth
of a meter. The range of the sensor is .1 meter to 15 meters.
